“I am not a boy that can ever be defined , I am not Fly , I am Levitation, I represent an entire generation” - Onika Tanya Maraj
As children we are divided into two genders, and from that we are assigned a color. Boys are Blue and girls are pink, but why ? Why do we associate these colors to define our kids “gender” ? as a result this causes our children to grow up being identified as something that goes against your freedom of choice and along with that they have to abide a social construct. I remember growing up and being attracted to Pink colored toys, dolls and etc but i felt restricted to even play with them due to society standards and how strict the Hispanic community can be due their belief in religion. The Pink ranger was the only pink toy i felt allowed to have and i cherished that toy forever ! In this series i wanted to give myself the freedom to color all the toys i wished to have as the kid the opposite color . The blue sweater depicts the “Gender Normative “ i was suppose to follow but decided to enjoy being me as colorful as i can be And i feel great ! Be you , and forget what society wants us to be! Because at the end our happiness is worth more than anything else !
